The infamous RMS Titanic was a British passenger liner that sank in the North Atlantic Ocean in the early morning of 15 April 1912 after colliding with an iceberg during her maiden voyage from Southampton to New York. The sinking resulted in the deaths of more than 1,500 passengers and crew, making it one of the deadliest commercial peacetime maritime disasters in modern history.
The RMS Titanic, the largest ship afloat at the time it entered service, was the second of three Olympic class ocean liners operated by the White Star Line, and was built by the Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast. The ship although now renowned for its fate remains a stunning design which embodied the height of luxury. Modelled on a luxury hotel rather than following the traditional design of previous liners, the ship offered passengers a new level of style and elegance. No attention to detail was missed as typified by the addition of the fourth funnel, which had no practical function but balanced the aesthetic.
