Douglas DC3 Dakota Limited Edition Print

£255.00

The Doug, the Dizzy, Old Methuselah, the Gooney Bird, the Grand Old Lady – but usually just the Dakota – the Douglas C47 / DC3 is one of the most significant aircraft ever made. Playing a major role in the invasion of Sicily, the D-Day Landings, the Berlin Airlift, and later in both Korea and Vietnam, if ever a plane deserved a distinguished service medal it’s this one. When General Eisenhower was asked what he believed to be the bedrock of America's success in World War II he named the bulldozer, the Jeep, the half-ton truck.... and the Dakota.

In total more than 16,000 were built and it’s testament to the aircraft’s strength, popularity and all round ruggedness that hundreds of these tough as nails workhorses are still flying and working today, even at well over seventy years old. Current uses include aerial crop spraying, freight transport, skydiver shuttling and sightseeing to name but a few, and their ability to use grass or dirt runways still makes them especially popular in developing countries. One example even still flies a passenger service in Canada’s Northwest Territories with Buffalo Airways, substituting wheels for snow skis when necessary.
