1955 Mercedes Benz 300SLR Limited Edition Print

In 1955 Sir Stirling Moss drove this Mercedes 300SLR to victory in the Mille Miglia. a one thousand mile time trial on Italian public roads, much of them rural, poorly surfaced, and lined with unprotected and excited spectators. In a time of just over 10 hours and at an average speed of a whisker under 100mph, Moss and his navigator Denis Jenkinson were more than half an hour quicker than their second placed team mate, Juan Manuel Fangio, a record time that would never be broken and an extraordinary feat of driving skill and endurance to this day. To give it some perspective they completed the final leg from Cremona to Brescia, a distance of 84 miles / 134 km, in just over 30 minutes at an average speed of more than 161 mph / 260 kmh, all achieved over sixty years ago on skinny crossply tyres, drum brakes, and with no seatbelts.

Together again in 2004 at the Goodwood Festival of Speed this priceless car and equally priceless driver were still giving it the full beans as they nailed it up Lord March’s driveway, and this remains one of our favourite photographs, with a real sense of speed and movement. Originally shot on film and in colour, this mostly black and white version draws attention to the car’s famous red number 722, representing Moss and Jenks’ allocated start time of 7.22am.
